Trump Shock: Party Bosses Humiliated

A Trump-endorsed outsider just crushed the New York Republican machine in Elise Stefanik’s old district, and party insiders are rattled.

Story Snapshot

  • Anthony Constantino, a Trump-backed business owner, won the Republican primary in New York’s 21st District by a wide margin.
  • State party bosses and most local committees backed career politician Robert Smullen, but grassroots voters rejected their choice.
  • Constantino is the founder of Sticker Mule, employs over 1,000 people in Upstate New York, and says he is self-funding his run.
  • He has pledged to donate his full congressional salary to charity and casts himself as an anti-corruption outsider.

Trump’s Candidate Tops Party Bosses in NY-21

Anthony Constantino’s victory in New York’s 21st Congressional District shows how Republican voters are still siding with President Donald Trump over party insiders. WAMC radio reported that Constantino was the only Republican in the race to receive Trump’s official endorsement, setting him apart from the start.[1] The New York Times noted that with most votes counted, Constantino led Assemblyman Robert Smullen by about 18 points, a blowout in a low-turnout primary.[2] Local reports put his final share near 60 percent of the vote.[3]

Party leaders did not want this outcome. The New York Times reported that the New York state Republican Party “controversially” backed Smullen and that he enjoyed support from 12 of 15 Republican committees in the district.[2] Voters shrugged that off. This mirrors a broader pattern in recent years where Trump-endorsed candidates defeat establishment picks in many primaries, with one national report noting that Trump-backed candidates won or advanced in dozens of Republican races in a single night.[16] The base is still choosing Trump-style outsiders over party control.

Business Builder, Not Career Politician

Constantino is running hard on his record as a business owner rather than as a politician. His campaign video says he founded Sticker Mule, described as an American manufacturing company employing over 1,000 people in Upstate New York.[9] That is a big footprint in a district that has seen factories close and jobs shipped away. North Country Public Radio likewise called him a political newcomer and identified him as the chief executive of Sticker Mule.[4] Ballotpedia lists him as the company’s founder and a first-time candidate.[5]

To many conservative voters, those private-sector roots matter more than time spent in Albany or Washington. Constantino’s video says he is self-funding his campaign so he can stay independent from special interests and be “nobody’s man but yours in Congress.”[9] He also pledges to donate his entire congressional salary to charity, a promise that appeals to taxpayers tired of seeing career politicians grow rich on the job.[9] Those claims will be easy to test in office through public campaign and salary records, and some observers have already called for outside audits to verify the self-funding and donation pledge.

A Nasty Primary and Unproven Claims

The primary itself turned ugly fast, which is common when outsiders challenge long-time insiders. Constantino’s ads accused Robert Smullen of being arrested for felony tax fraud and of refusing to endorse Trump, and even said Smullen angrily refused a handshake after a debate.[9] However, the research so far has not turned up arrest records, court documents, debate transcripts, or news reports that prove those specific claims. That lack of proof leaves those charges unverified, and fair-minded voters should treat them with caution until real records appear.

Smullen responded in kind. Local coverage highlighted that Smullen accused Constantino of not paying taxes, leading Constantino to threaten a defamation lawsuit.[12] Smullen’s campaign website even has a page titled “Anthony Constantino’s False Claims,” where it tries to list what it says are lies, including a charge that Constantino once donated to Democrat Paul Tonko.[13] But, just like Constantino’s attacks, Smullen’s tax accusation has not been backed up with Internal Revenue Service documents or other hard evidence in the record provided.[11][12] Both sides, in other words, lobbed sharp charges without yet showing the paperwork.

Media Spin, MAGA Energy, and What Comes Next

National media rushed to label the race “bonkers” and “spectacle,” language used by Politico in a long feature on the fight to replace Elise Stefanik.[7] That kind of framing is familiar to conservatives. When regular voters reject the preferred candidate of party elites, big outlets often act like something is wrong with the voters, not the system. Yet the bottom line is simple: the people who showed up chose the Trump-backed outsider over the state party’s pick, by a solid margin.[2][3]

For conservatives worried about government overreach, soaring costs, and corruption, Constantino’s win is both a warning and a chance. It warns state and national Republican leaders that trying to hand-pick “safe” insiders can backfire. It also opens the door for a business-minded representative who says he will fight to lower taxes, create jobs, and clean up Washington, even though his campaign has not yet laid out detailed bills or policy plans.[10] Voters in the North Country will now decide in November if this Trump-aligned outsider is the one they trust to defend their wallets, their communities, and their voice in Congress.
